Motorino joins the food explosion on Ship Street, opening its second location since it first brought its signature Neapolitan pizza to Hong Kong’s Soho district in March 2013. In the new pizzeria, Motorino will continue doing what it does best: perfectly charred and supple pie crusts, topped with the finest artisanal ingredients from Italy, for a delicious pizza that is arguably second to none.
Lauded as“the best of a new generation of pizzas” by Frank Bruni, former restaurant critic for The New York Times, Motorino is the result of Chef Mathieu Palombino’s untiring obsession for Neapolitan pizza. Palombino crafts his version just as they do in Naples, Italy: oven-baked in a custom-made Stefano Ferrara brick oven and topped with high quality artisanal ingredients, bringing a simple pizza to new heights, and taking New York, and now Hong Kong, along for the ride.
At the new restaurant, Wanchai diners can expect all the signature favourites served piping hot from oven to table, including Brussels Sprouts Pizza (HK$158) with fior di latte, garlic, pecorino, smoked pancetta and olive oil, hearty Meatball Pizza (HK$168) — recently named Best Food of the Year 2013 by Time Out Hong Kong — and the classic Prosciutto di Parma (HK$188) with fior di latte, pecorino, olive oil and oregano. Befitting of pizza’s elevated gourmet status, Mathieu recommends the “Pizza Wine” to pair: Gragnano Cantine Federiciane 2011 (HK$68 by the glass, HK$328 by the bottle), a sparking red wine from Naples that is slightly sweet and fizzy. Other selections of wines, beers, and cocktails are also available.
Motorino’s tried and tested antipasti dishes include Roasted Peppers (HK$98) with buffalo mozzarella, Octopus and Potato Salad (HK$138) and Cockle Clam Crostino (HK$118), and are an excellent complement to the pizzas. And to finish, a generous portion of the signature Tiramisu is a must!
Motorino Wanchai is the latest concept from Black Sheep Restaurants, and will serve lunch and dinner daily, from noon to midnight.
