THE WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE COFFEE, PANAMA GEISHA, TO HONG KONG

Panama Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha Cañas Verdes Coffee to Launch at The Coffee Academïcs from 12th October

Last month, the Best of Panama coffee auction held by the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama broke all previous price records with the sale of a 100-pound lot from Hacienda La Esmeralda. The coffee, a natural processed Geisha cultivated at 1,800 meters above sea level in the mountainous region of Boquete, western Panama, fetched no less than US$601 per pound (a total of US$60,100 for 100 pounds).

Of the existing 45.5kg of the record-breaking coffee, The Coffee Academïcs Hong Kong is delighted to be receiving 7kg of the highly sought after batch. In total, 7kg of Panama Geisha is enough to serve approximately 300 incredible cups of coffee for the distinguished drinker. From 12 October onwards, The Coffee Academïcs invites coffee aficionados to immerse themselves in Hong Kong’s very first ‘601 Experience’, an exclusive taste of the world’s best – and most expensive – cup of coffee.

“We are so proud and happy to be the first to make history to bring in 7kg of this much prized Coffee into Hong Kong. This coffee is absolutely incredible and the coffee is arriving just in time for our new shop opening in Tai Koo Shing which we hope to enjoy this with Hong Kong at our new shop.” says Jennifer Liu, Chair-Lady of The Coffee Academics.

What is Panama Geisha Coffee?

Dubbed the “mother of all coffee records”, the recent sale of US$601/lb is no doubt a result of the top-scoring batch of Hacienda La Esmeralda earning 94.1 points out of 100. For the first time, Panama Geisha presents coffee as a luxury product – one that deserves higher prices for its distinctive and unrivalled cup profile.

Farmer Profile: The Petersons

In 1964, Hacienda La Esmeralda was bought by a Californian banker by the name of Rudolph A. Peterson. The land comprised an area of several hundred hectares in the Palmira region, which, later in 1987, was planted with coffee trees by the Peterson family. In 1996, the family purchased another farm in the area, Esmeralda Jaramillo, which is where they discovered the famous Geisha trees – named after the village in Ethiopia where they were first found in the 1930s. This ground-breaking discovery revolutionized the coffee industry, and led to the family’s consequential wins in the Best of Panama competition beginning in 2006. Now, the Petersons are known worldwide as elite coffee producers who consistently break price records at coffee auctions.
