With its unique geographical setting and pristine natural landscape, Australia is home to some of the world’s freshest and most delicious produce. The harbour city of Sydney, New South Wales (NSW), is famed for its abundant seafood, while south of the city Wagyu beef, and fresh, full-flavoured fruit and vegetables are the must-tries of the NSW South Coast. Wine lovers, meanwhile, need look no further than Canberra, a city of culinary delights recently named the third best city to visit by Lonely Planet in 2018. To introduce visitors from Hong Kong to the multi-faceted Australian culinary scene, Tourism Australia has teamed up with Destination NSW and VisitCanberra to present a new food and travel programme, In the Pursuit of Delicacies(Chinese title《尋找高端美食》), filmed in Sydney, Wollongong, the NSW South Coast and Canberra.
Produced by Fantastic Television Limited, the three-part series is hosted by famous Hong Kong gourmand Walter Kei and artist Ava Liu, who have travelled to Australia in search of various high-end delicacies. Join Walter and Ava as they travel between cities to savour fresh Australian oysters, hunt truffles with truffle hunting dogs, and embark on a journey to learn about the stories behind Wagyu beef and other culinary delights. The programme will be broadcast on Fantastic TV every Sunday at 10:30pm from 15 July.
A taste of Vivid Sydney and contemporary Australian cuisine
During their time in Sydney, Walter and Ava started off at The Grounds of Alexandria, a popular gourmet destination where they sampled freshly brewed coffee and Australia’s favourite breakfast, avocado toast. Next up was a visit to newly opened Barangaroo House, a stunning, three-storey restaurant where the pair enjoyed a range of contemporary Australian dishes complemented by spectacular views of Sydney Harbour. Other highlights of their trip to Sydney included visits to an artisan butter factory, a local brewery and the Sydney Fish Market. Walter and Ava also got a chance to experience the annual Vivid Sydney festival, a celebration of light, music and ideas that takes over Australia’s global city for 23 days and nights each Winter.
NSW South Coast & Wollongong – motorcycle rides along the shore
After Sydney, Walter and Ava travelled the NSW South Coast. Their first stop was Schottlander’s Wagyu Farm, where the hosts learnt about the farming process of premium livestock before tucking into a sumptuous wagyu meal. The pair also had the chance to sample local seafood at McAsh Oysters, as well as the world-famous fish and chips at Greenwell Point. Walter and Ava’s most memorable experience though was the Just Cruisin’ motorcycle tour. Riding motorcycles along the breezy Australian coastline was the perfect way to end their time in Wollongong.
Savouring truffles in emerging Canberra
For the last stop of their journey, Walter and Ava arrived at Australian’s capital and emerging tourist destination Canberra. The pair wasted little time heading to the famous Turalla Truffles Farm, where their search for ‘black diamonds’ was led by truffle hunting dogs and proved an interesting experience for Ava. “It was a special experience to participate in a truffle hunt. The dogs were friendly and the owner was generous. We also got to try the truffle pasta he cooked,” Ava recalled. While in Canberra, our hosts also had an enjoyable trip to local vineyards and breweries.
Carmen Tam, Tourism Australia’s Manager for Hong Kong said: “The salubrious climate in Australia has nurtured an abundance of beautiful produce. Delicacies can be found around every corner of the country, and this is reflected in Australia’s diverse culinary scene. Through In the Pursuit of Delicacies, we hope to showcase some of the lesser-known food destinations in Australia, to dig into the stories behind our culinary traditions and to present them to equally culinary minded visitors from Hong Kong.”
