Rosewood Hong Kong Presents “Lucky Dragon”: Where Heritage Meets Art During Art Basel Hong Kong
As Art Basel Hong Kong electrifies the city’s cultural landscape, Rosewood transcends its role as host to become a lead curator, transforming its spaces into dynamic platforms for discovery and dialogue.
Driven by the brand’s A Sense of Place® philosophy, this year’s Art Month programming invites international guests and local communities alike to explore the themes of joy, belief, and belonging through a fusion of artistic and culinary encounters. From 10 March to 22 April, Rosewood unveils a multisensory tribute to the cultural heartbeat of Hong Kong—fostering a deeper connection with the city we call home.
A Lucky Encounter
At the center of Rosewood’s Art Month program is Lucky Dragon, an installation by Dutch artist Frankey, on view from 23 March to 22 April. By blending the powerful luck of the dragon with the boundless imagination of an eight-year-old, Lucky Dragon shows us that our deepest cultural symbols are often clearest when seen through simple wonder. The work is designed to be more than a static object; it is an invitation to participate. By high-fiving the “Little Frankey” figure, the viewer completes the piece, moving from a passive observer to an active part of the artwork’s story.
The sculpture captures a moment of impossible gravity: a towering dragon lifted by the small, outstretched hand of a child. This image was born from Frankey’s observation of the number eight—a symbol of prosperity woven into the fabric of Hong Kong and the octagonal architecture of Rosewood. To Frankey, eight is also an age—a threshold where the world feels vast but entirely within reach.
By bridging the auspicious power of the dragon with the unclouded perspective of an eight-year-old, the installation explores a universal truth: that our most profound cultural symbols are often best understood through the simplicity of wonder. It is a reminder that meaning isn’t just found in tradition, but in the joy we bring to it.
“At Rosewood, design is about creating a platform where artists, culture, and community come together. Lucky Dragon is a powerful example of how we champion creative voices while fostering exchange across our global art and design community. After first connecting with Frankey in Amsterdam, we were excited to introduce his perspective to Hong Kong — creating a dialogue between two vibrant creative cities. By bringing his work into Rosewood Hong Kong, we celebrate the city’s energy while inviting guests to engage with art not as spectators, but as part of a living encounter.”
Trish Luyckx, Chief Design and Project Services Officer, Rosewood
“The dragon has a superpower. It can radiate love and luck at the same time. I hope people smile, but I also hope they leave a little more curious—about dragons, about the number eight, about the way different cultures hold on to luck.”
ARTIST FRANKEY
To further ground this connection to place, Frankey takes up residence at Rosewood Hong Kong during Art Basel. This residency marks a continuation of his global creative lineage with the brand, following his celebrated signature footprint at Rosewood Amsterdam.
Moving beyond the gallery walls, Frankey will engage directly with the community through a series of curated intimate encounters, including an artist-led talk and a gallery tour. These moments offer a rare opportunity for guests to dialogue with the creative mind behind the installation, bridging his playful urban perspective from the historic canals of Amsterdam to the iconic shores of Victoria Harbour.
