A Quarter-Century of Immersive Luxury: Anantara Hotels & Resorts Turns 25
Anantara Hotels & Resorts is marking a significant milestone in 2026 — 25 years since the luxury brand first opened its doors on the Gulf of Thailand. To celebrate, parent company Minor Hotels has launched a global anniversary campaign, 25 Years of Unforgettable Journeys, honouring the destinations, team members and guests who have helped shape one of Asia’s most recognised luxury hotel brands.

Born in Thailand, Built for the World
The story begins in Hua Hin. On 4 March 2001, the very first Anantara resort welcomed guests in this seaside town three hours south of Bangkok, its architecture inspired by a traditional Thai village, its gardens tropical and immersive. The brand was the vision of William Heinecke, Chairman and Founder of Minor International, who saw a gap in the market for luxury travel rooted in genuine cultural discovery.
The name Anantara comes from the Sanskrit word meaning “without end” — a fitting choice for a brand built around the idea that travel is a lifelong journey of discovery.
“Creating Anantara remains one of my proudest professional accomplishments,” said Mr Heinecke. “Building the brand from the ground up gave us the opportunity to apply what we learned from operating hotels in Thailand for more than 20 years and satisfy the growing demand from discerning travellers who want memorable local experiences and adventures while having luxurious accommodations to come back to each evening.”

From One Resort to 50+ Properties Across 24 Countries
Growth from that single Hua Hin property was both purposeful and far-reaching. Anantara spread across Thailand — to the Golden Triangle in the north and Koh Samui in the south — before making its first international move in 2006 with Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort. That debut outside Thailand proved the concept could travel, and the brand soon expanded into the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
A landmark moment came in 2015 when a storied Bangkok property was rebranded as Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel, signalling the brand’s evolution from resort-only to a full luxury hospitality brand equally at home in major cities. In recent years that urban ambition has taken Anantara to some of Europe’s most iconic addresses — Amalfi, Amsterdam, Budapest, Dublin, Nice, Rome and Vienna.
Further expansion is on the horizon, with upcoming properties planned for Australia, Japan, Egypt, Croatia, Argentina, Turks & Caicos and the United States. The brand is also introducing Anantara Tented Camps in 2026, beginning with Anantara Tented Camp Kafue River in Zambia, adjacent to Kafue National Park.
“Anantara has played a defining role in shaping Minor Hotels’ luxury portfolio over the past 25 years,” said Dillip Rajakarier, Group CEO of Minor International. “Our focus remains on thoughtful, disciplined expansion that stays true to Anantara’s foundations, with immersive experiences, a strong sense of place and genuine cultural connection guiding how and where the brand evolves.”

The People Behind the Experience
At the heart of the anniversary celebration is a campaign called People Who Inspire — a series of 25 profiles spotlighting the Anantara team members whose expertise and passion define the guest experience at properties around the world. From artisans and conservationists to spiritual guides and long-serving hosts, the series is a reminder that luxury hospitality is ultimately about human connection.
The first profile features Yingsuphat “Alex” Wrarapho, Chief Experience Insider at Anantara Hua Hin Resort — the property where it all began. Khun Alex has been part of the Anantara family since the very start, sharing Thailand’s warmth and culture with guests for 25 years.

Signature Anniversary Experiences
To mark the occasion, Anantara has curated a global programme of signature experiences that reflect what the brand does best: placing guests at the centre of the destination’s culture and surroundings.
At Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome, guests can board the only private luxury boat on the River Tiber, gliding past ancient landmarks and contemporary Roman life from the water. In the Maldives, Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas offers private stargazing sessions at SKY, the resort’s overwater observatory. And at Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort in northern Thailand, guests spend their morning alongside the camp’s resident elephants, even preparing a gourmet cake for the gentle giants to enjoy.
Dining and spa experiences inspired by local traditions will be unveiled at select properties throughout the year, completing a programme that honours the brand’s founding philosophy: travel as cultural immersion, not just accommodation.
