Universal Studios Singapore welcomed more than two million guests in its nine months of soft opening in 2010, and has already hosted hundreds of thousands more so far this year, as the rides, shows, guest experiences and daily park operations have been honed and readied for this official Grand Opening day.

21 rides and shows are featured within Universal Studios Singapore showcasing world-popular themes such as Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure, Shrek 4-D Adventure, Revenge of the Mummy, and Battlestar Galactica. And the action and entertainment opportunities for USS guests continue to grow with the soon-to-be-announced premiere of the world’s first Madagascar-themed ride, Madagascar: A Crate Adventure.  Yet another blockbuster ride is scheduled for later this year, the much-anticipated Transformers® attraction, based on the popular box-office-hit movie series.

Universal Studios Singapore is located within Singapore’s first integrated resort, Resorts World Sentosa.  Lodging is only steps away, with four hotels (and two more coming soon), each with a uniquely different theme.  Also available for guest enjoyment is FestiveWalk, the perfect venue for dining and shopping while experiencing the Asian debut of some of the world’s top brands.

Mr Dennis Gilbert, RWS’ Senior Vice President of Attractions, said: “The Grand Opening celebrations will bring to Singapore a slice of the Hollywood glitz and action, in the same way that Universal Studios Singapore brought Universal’s famous Ride The Movies® experience here. On the Grand Opening day, the park will be exuberant with energy, setting the stage for many more exciting times to come in the future.”

Mr. Michael Silver, President of Global Business Development, Universal Parks & Resorts, said: “Universal Studios theme parks are known throughout the world for extraordinary movie-themed rides and shows and unique experiences that are enjoyed by the entire family.  We are proud to be a part of the official Universal Studios Singapore grand opening ceremonies and welcome Universal Studios Singapore to the growing family of Universal Studios parks and resorts worldwide.”

Asia’s Hottest Clubs Open at Marina Bay Sands in July

Just months before the celebrities and jetsetters fly into Singapore for Formula 1’s only night race, the Singapore Grand Prix, Marina Bay Sands announces the opening of Asia’s much-anticipated nightclubs in July. Emerging from Marina Bay and enclosed in the distinctive glass crystal pavilion, Pangaea and Avalon, two of the hottest nightclub brands in the U.S. and Europe, will captivate partygoers in Singapore and from around the world with its innovative concepts, music and premium service.

Pangaea, the ultra-lounge bottle club that swiftly attracted celebrity followers in New York, Miami and London, has hosted A-listers including Madonna, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Moss and Will Smith. Occupying 6,000 square feet, Pangaea is on the first level of the southern Crystal Pavilion. Patrons can access the club through the underwater tunnel connected to The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. The ultra-lounge will be able to host up to 400 partygoers at one time or over a thousand a night.

Pangaea operator Michael Ault said, “When we first announced our plans to open this club, the structure was not even built. We only had our imagination and a few wild ideas. Today, piercing the waters of Marina Bay, the crystal pavilion is one of the most stunning and perhaps the best venues in Singapore. We said from day one that we will create something the world has never seen and with the formulae of great architecture and our experience in successfully operating the best clubs in leading international cities, we simply cannot wait to open our doors and put Singapore on the global party map.”

The second and with a completely distinct concept from Pangaea will be Avalon. Across two levels and over 12,000 square feet, entertainment at Marina Bay Sands will reach a whole new high with Avalon. The club will feature an exciting line-up of leading international DJ’s, live concerts and high profile events.??

Avalon co-founder and club guru Steven Adelman said, “Avalon has hosted virtually every celebrity – The Black Eyed Peas, Ashton Kutcher, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Pink, to name a few. Parties at our club in L.A have included the annual Grammy after-party hosted by Justin Timberlake. Here in Singapore, we are building the most ambitious and state-of-the-art visual, sound and light system we’re aware of anywhere. The combination of Avalon’s star power and Marina Bay Sands’ iconic structure will set the stage for the biggest party in Asia,” said Steven.?

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands Executive Director, Mr. John Postle, said, “We have discovered two of the most leading and sought-after club operators in the world. With the creative genius of both Michael Ault and Steven Adelman, we are creating an entertainment hotspot like no other in Asia. Floating on Marina Bay and set in the stunning crystal pavilion, Marina Bay Sands will be home to every guest looking for the best energy in town.”?

China

Jimmy’s Kitchen reopens in Shanghai over 80 years after its journey began

As Shanghai continues to evolve into an international dining destination, an important slice of its gourmet heritage has been reinstated. Jimmy’s Kitchen was first opened in Shanghai in 1924 by Jimmy, a former US Army officer stationed in China. It later closed in 1948. Meanwhile, however, the restaurant expanded to Hong Kong in 1928 where it has been in operation ever since, making it the oldest continuously running Western restaurant in China.

History has now turned full circle, and the 87-year-old dining institution has returned to its city of origin with the re-opening of Jimmy’s Kitchen Shanghai. The new restaurant, now owned and managed by Hong Kong’s Epicurean Group, is located at the historic Old Jin Jiang Hotel in the former French Concession.

Staying true to its original vision, Jimmy’s Kitchen serves an extensive and well-priced menu of classic Continental dishes in a relaxed, family-friendly environment. Jimmy’s phenomenal success and appeal over the decades is attributed to its friendly service and the solid dependable menu that harks back to a bygone era. Old school favorites like Beer Battered Fish & Chips and Corn-fed Chicken Kiev have been top sellers for over half a century. The classic Sunday Roast is a well-loved weekend ritual.

Other classics on the menu include Lobster Bisque, Baked Escargots in Garlic Herb Butter, Oysters Kilpatrick, Home-cured Norwegian Salmon, Rosemary Roast Leg of Lamb, Dry Madras Curry, and Ox Tail Pot au Feu. While the recipes are traditional, Jimmy’s Kitchen has always strived to keep the menu fresh and move with the times, and the talented Executive Chef Cyrille Molle from France delivers on this culinary commitment.

In addition to classic Continental cuisine, Jimmy’s Kitchen is also renowned for its succulent broiler-seared steaks. The selection of premium cuts use grain-fed Australian meats dry-aged according to Jimmy’s traditional methods and cooked at 650-degree Celsius on a top-of-the-line imported US broiler. Generous helpings of delicious desserts, such as Jimmy’s signature Baked Alaska, Bread and Butter Pudding and Warm Chocolate Fondant, add to the allure.

Fine wines are an important part of the dining experience at Jimmy’s Kitchen. The Shanghai restaurant features more than 150 labels of Old and New World vintages stored in a temperature-controlled glass cellar. Expertly selected by the Jimmy’s management team, the wine list is sure to delight connoisseurs with a wide range encompassing everything old and new from China’s Grace Vineyard to Chateau Musar in Lebanon. After-dinner digestifs include a large and growing range of single malt whiskeys and other premium spirits.

Stepping into the convivial dining room on level one of the first floor of the Old Jin Jiang Hotel, diners immediately experience the timeless charm of Jimmy’s Kitchen. The warm wood-paneled restaurant features soft glowing sconces, leather booth seating, hardwood floors and crisp white table settings. Black and white archival photographs link the unique heritage of Jimmy’s Kitchen in Shanghai and Hong Kong throughout the past century.

Jimmy’s Kitchen also features a bar for pre- or post-dinner libations, and two private function rooms, one of which will accommodate 2 to 24 persons and the second private function room will accommodate 2 to 30 persons with the larger room equipped with a small stage.  These private function rooms are perfect for family gatherings, board meetings, wine tastings, intimate rendezvous and a host of other special events.

Jimmy’s Kitchen is a place where time slows and you remember the joys of savouring a great meal with family and friends served by professional staff. Jimmy’s Kitchen is also a precious part of Shanghai history.

NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex Awarded Space Shuttle Atlantis

Kennedy Space Center, Fla. – NASA officials announced today that Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex has been selected to permanently display space shuttle Atlantis upon retirement of the Space Shuttle Program. Atlantis, one of three orbiters in the space shuttle fleet, will fly the last scheduled space shuttle mission before being retired in 2011.

"This is a proud moment for space shuttle workers, Brevard County and Florida," said Bill Moore, Chief Operating Officer of Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, upon news of the announcement. "We are honored to be entrusted with space shuttle Atlantis, to preserve this remarkable national treasure and share the space shuttle story with millions of visitors from around the world."

The $100 million exhibit for Atlantis will be the marquee element of Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex's 10-year master plan. Initial design concepts for the 65,000 square-foot home for the space-flown orbiter include viewing the space shuttle "in flight," showing how the spacecraft worked in space and providing a unique vantage point for guests to look at the complex vehicle up close. Complementing the orbiter display will be interactive features reflecting major accomplishments of the Space Shuttle Program, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the International Space Station.

About the orbiter home, Moore stated, "Plans are underway to create a home for Atlantis that is as much about the thousands of people who have worked on the Space Shuttle Program as the space shuttle itself. Guests will be close enough to almost touch this real space flown orbiter."

Officials with Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex plan to break ground on Atlantis' new home in 2012 with a grand opening planned for 2013. The orbiter home will be located in the Shuttle Plaza at the main Visitor Complex; incorporating the Shuttle Launch Experience attraction.

Meet Anantara

Naturopathic Doctor Govindasamy Gopal.

Doctor Govindasamy Gopal was born and raised in a multi-cultural village in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India, where his traditional herbalist grandfather worked as the village health guru.

At the age of 15 Govindasamy’s own pathway into natural remedies began to take shape, with startling results, when he saw a children’s vaccination programme being carried out in his local village.   Though the service was welcomed by the villagers, Govindasamy noticed that the medicine didn’t necessarily suit all the children. In response he decided to search for natural methods to replace the vaccinations, and consequently advocated healthy eating, meditation and yoga.  At first his fellow villagers thought he had finally lost the (natural) plot, that is, until they started seeing real results.

It came as no surprise therefore that a naturopathic path beckoned – “I like to follow natural healing pathways which promote wellness without harming the body, so I started learning about naturopathy, acupuncture, yoga and nutrition, and it made so much sense. These gentle therapies address the underlying problem, rather than masking over it, and help people to feel better for the long term with no adverse side effects. I’ve met people who have been helped by these practices when no other western medicine has worked, and on a more personal level they’ve enabled me to improve my own health as well as my own family’s.”

Putting his money where his mouth is, quite literally eating by example, Dr Gopal never pays a visit to the doctor, instead treating himself simply by eating the right food to rectify imbalances.

Putting his multi-faceted skill set to good use, Dr Gopal has been a central figure for over two years now at Anantara Si Kao's unique Wellness 360 retreat.

Offering four unique and results oriented programmes; detox, de-stress, weight loss and quit smoking, Dr Gopal has become renowned as an outgoing naturopathic consultant with a passion for his specialist health fields that takes personal health to a whole new level.  He never tires of teaching clients about healthy lifestyle, body detoxification and food – explaining how to eat, what to eat, when to eat and how to combine.

“I take a detailed health history of the client, then based on their individual body needs I advise treatments as well as healthy lifestyle tips. The majority of my clients are happy to have learnt more about how to take their health into their own hands and therefore follow the wellness 360 concept even when they return home. It is truly an enriching and rewarding experience to see how people have turned their lives around through my natural teachings!”

Official Announcement of the Award Winners for 2011 Took Place This Morning at Salone del Mobile

W Hotels Worldwide continues its successful collaboration with Design Miami/ Basel with the announcement of the 2011 Designers of the Future Award.  This event marks the second occasion that the two organizations have collaborated on the award, having announced the coveted award along with their partnership at Salone del Mobile in Milan one year ago.

The Designers of the Future Award, originally launched by Design Miami/ Basel in 2006, recognizes young, emerging designers whose work reflects exceptional innovation and beauty in limited-edition design.  The winners named today will go on to present their work at Basel in June.  W Hotels, a leader in design and innovation, further backs the award by allowing for the award winners to carry out their legacy in various W Hotels around the world.

The 2011 “W Hotels Designers of the Future Award” looks beyond traditional product and furniture design, seeking work that is truly groundbreaking and innovative.  This year, the recognized designers draw inspiration from “Conversation Pieces,” a theme provided to the design candidates by Design Miami/ Basel.  The 2011 Award winners include: UK-based designer Asif Khan, Austrian design team Mischer’Traxler, and Studio Juju in Singapore.

The 2011 Designers of the Future international jury was comprised of Wava Carpenter, Associate Director, Design Miami/; Aric Chen, Beijing Design Week; Li Edelkoort, Edelkoort Inc.; Marcus Fairs, Editor-in-Chief, Dezeen.com; Alexis Georgacopoulos, Director of the Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne; Constance Rubini, School of Decorative Arts, Paris; Kenya Hara, Creative Director, Muji; Konstantin Grcic, KGID; Zoe Ryan, Art Institute of Chicago; and Mike Tiedy, SVP, Global Brand Design & Innovation, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc,  the parent company of W Hotels.

2010 W Hotels Designer of the Future Awards were presented to Beta Tank, Graham Hudson, rAndom International, and Zigelbaum + Coelho.  W Hotels created a global platform for these designers, helping them take their work from a conceptual stage to a level where they can expose their work to consumers and design enthusiasts alike.  The winners traveled to W locations across the globe during key design weeks, setting up on-site installations at W Barcelona, W Doha and showcasing their work at Istanbul Design week.

Zigelbaum + Coelho and rAndom International, were also integrated at the W Taipei Premiere Event (=W Taipei’s Grand Openning Event) in March 2011, where  rAndom International created a permanent installation for this hotel.  For the months ahead Zigelbaum + Coelho has been commissioned for the St. Petersburg Premiere Event in June 2011.

When the W brand opened its first hotel in New York in 1998, it transformed the meaning of hotels and established itself as the clear leader in the contemporary lifestyle hotel space.  W Hotels strives for cutting-edge, future-forward design, inspired by the location and executed through unique collaborations with upcoming and well-known creative talents. From the Ottoman-referenced glam of a jewel box of W Istanbul to the design inspired by the dual personality of the British man at the recently-opened W London – Leicester Square, each new W Hotel is guided by Starwood’s in-house design team and is then fueled and delivered by a unique collaboration between designers, architects, graphic designers, photographers, stylists and W’s Global Fashion and Music Directors.

The W brand’s global growth fosters opportunities for new design partnerships with established as well as upcoming designers.  For W St. Petersburg, which will mark the debut of W Hotels in Russia when it opens this spring, W partnered with acclaimed architects and designers Antonio Citterio & Partners to blend contemporary style with Russia’s elegant traditions. The first W Hotel in Paris, W Paris – Opera debuts in early 2012 with interiors by Rockwell Group Europe (RGe).  Diego Gronda, Managing and Creative Director of RGe, the Madrid satellite office of New York’s Rockwell Group founded by David Rockwell, is leading the design, which takes its inspiration from Paris, the City of Light, combined with the energy of New York, where W Hotels was born resulting into a creative idea called “The Spark”

These new hotels join the W brand’s already prestigious European and Middle Eastern portfolio, which includes W Istanbul by architect/designer Geomim and W Doha Hotel & Residences, which merges traditional Arabian imagery with the signature contemporary cool of W Hotels, by London-based United Designers. The W brand’s European flagship and first hotel in Western Europe, W Barcelona, was designed by Ricardo Bofill and is already established as a modern-day landmark with its signature full-sail architectural shape.

Rounding out the brand’s stellar design partner roster is Clodagh (W Fort Lauderdale); Tony Chi (W Santiago); Glamorous Corp. and g+a (W Hong Kong); Graft (W New York – Downtown); Yabu Pushelberg (W New York – Times Square renovation); Thom Filicia (W Atlanta – Buckhead and W San Diego and W Los Angeles – Westwood renovations); Patricia Uriquola (W Retreat & Spa – Vieques Island);

Landmark Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka Closes for Redevelopment After 55 Years of Operations

An iconic Worldhotels affiliate in Tokyo, Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka, is closing for redevelopment.

The announcement by owners Seibu Holdings that it is shutting its doors at the end of March means the end to an era for the much-loved institution dating back to 1955.

The First Class Collection affiliate of Worldhotels since 1998 was re-designed with a landmark 40 storey tower built by the famed architect Kenzo Tange in 1983.

But the owners have decided to close the once highly-fashionable hotel with the “change of the times”. The site is scheduled to be redeveloped but no firm plans have yet been decided upon.

Affectionately known as the 'Akasaka Prince’ or 'Aka Pri’, the hotel was a popular choice of celebrities and politicans, and a frequent venue for government meeting and press conferences.

“The Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka was much-loved and it is always sad to see an iconic institution close, but life moves on,” said Roland Jegge, Vice President Asia-Pacific for Worldhotels.

Worldhotels features a growing collection of alternative unique hotels in Japan, including four in Tokyo – RIHGA Royal Hotel Tokyo, Dai-ichi Hotel Tokyo, Hotel Grand Palace and Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo.

Elsewhere in Japan, the portfolio extends to RIHGA Royal Hotels in Hiroshima, Kyoto and Osaka, Portopia Hotel in Osaka Bay and Rose Hotel Yokohama.

Ministry of Sound Chooses Likuid as Exclusive Hong Kong Partner

DJ Steve Smart to launch the MoS events at Likuid on April 15

Hong Kong’s hottest new nightclub Likuid has been appointed official venue for the legendary global dance music movement Ministry of Sound.

With Asia’s most state-of-the-art sound system and high-tech lighting, the Lan Kwai Fong nightspot has secured the exclusive rights to stage Ministry of Sound DJs, parties and VIP events in Hong Kong.

Ministry of Sound’s Tours and Events Coordinator, Rachael Boden said: “When Ministry of Sound launched its new VIP touring brand, we wanted to take what works so well in the VIP area at the club in London and emulate it around the globe. We wanted a club that had the ambience, style and pure indulgence to help us re-create this and Likuid was the perfect choice to partner with to make Ministry of Sound VIP a success in Hong Kong”.

Boden continues: “As a company, our motto is “to create the moments people live for” and we plan to do exactly that with our parties in Hong Kong. We hope to make fantastic events that leave people wanting more. The only way is up for Ministry events in Hong Kong and we can’t wait to get started out there”.

A calendar of at least four Ministry of Sound events a year opens on April 15 with one of MoS’s most famous DJs, Steve Smart.

When asked about his first trip to Hong Kong, Steve Smart said: “I’ve played all over the globe from Ibiza to Russia to Poland to Oz but I’ve always heard so many amazing things about the crowd and the passion of the people of Hong Kong for dance music in general, so for me I am expecting an amazing response to the hard work I have been putting into the remixes of artist’s and bands that are big there, and getting to showcase some new music to the crowd too!”

Smart adds: “I have worked with Ministry of Sound for a long while now, be it signing my own productions to their label, remixing for their artists/acts or playing at the world famous club in London. For me representing them overseas is an honour as I have so much respect for the brand who (let’s face it) was there from the beginning! I always put in 110% to all of my DJ sets and this will be no exception! Expect more!”
