(The Big ‘Positive Hong Kong’ March)
Duddell’s is giving Chinese New Year an artsy edge, collaborating with Hong Kong artist Stanley Wong, aka anothermountainmain, to offer limited-edition treats and gifts for Chinese New Year. Duddell’s Michelin starred Executive Chef Siu Hin-Chi’s traditional New Year Cake and Turnip Cake will be presented in celebratory cake boxes that are sure to delight family and friends during the festive gatherings. The designs are distinctly Hong Kong, artistically honouring the city’s heritage in the form of both food and art.
The cake boxes incorporate artwork from the M K Lau Collection, an early 20th century water color calendar poster entitled The Big March by celebrated Chinese artist Hang Zhiying (杭穉英), showing children happily celebrating the Lunar New Year. The painting has been re-interpreted by anothermountainman with the ubiquitous red-white-blue striped pattern of plastic canvas bags which has become one of his favourite motifs with symbolic meaning of ‘positive Hong Kong’. Wong first started exploring it in his redwhiteblue series since 2001 which he exhibited in more than 50 shows around the world. At the 51st Venice Biennale, Wong represented Hong Kong with an installation of redwhiteblue tea house. Till today, he continues to be inspired by what it means to Hong Kong’s distinct identity.
Duddell’s welcomes the Year of the Horse, with wishes of health and parity for the Lunar New Year with the sweet New Year Cake (HK$260) and savoury Turnip Cake (HK$310) packaged in special edition tins designed by anothermountainman – available for sale from 13 to 31 January 2014. Duddell’s gift vouchers are also available for purchase.
