In 1972, a young European princess arrived in New York with a few jersey dresses and a dream. Diane von Furstenberg went on to build a global luxury lifestyle brand and become one of the premier names in American fashion. Now, Rizzoli is proud to present the definitive history of Diane von Furstenberg’s legendary wrap dress—the dress that started it all.
In 2014, DVF celebrated the 40th anniversary of the wrap and its continued relevance with a retrospective exhibition, Journey of a Dress, at the former Wilshire May Company Building in Los Angeles. In galleries wrapped in print and color, visitors were immersed in the world of DVF. Now, Journey of a Dress has been immortalized in this striking volume that lets the reader fully experience the exhibition through its three parts: the timeline, the wrap army and the art salon.
From Diana Vreeland’s first letter declaring DVF’s clothes “absolutely smashing,” to a young Iman on the runway, Penélope Cruz on screen and Michelle Obama on her first White House Christmas card—every era of the storied dress, and von Furstenberg’s professional life, are captured in part one, the timeline.
For the retrospective, DVF created a 200-mannequin “wrap army” curated by theme and featuring the most quintessential wraps. In this book, it has been documented in vivid color. From the very first leopard wrap dress produced in 1974 to “anniversary wraps” designed in 2014, the second part of Journey of a Dress serves as a beautiful catalogue of the exhibition and a colorful homage to one of the most enduring styles of all time.
The designer’s own private art collection—always a source of inspiration—comprises part three, including images of von Furstenberg throughout the decades by the artists of her time. Journey of a Dress features photographs by Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz, and Francesco Scavullo, among many others, artwork by close friends such as Andy Warhol and Francesco Clemente, and contemporary Chinese and American art commissioned by von Furstenberg, including a work by Barbara Kruger created for the exhibition.
Journey of a Dress is a private tour, a lookbook, an art book, and a history lesson, all captured in one volume as vibrant as the prints that made von Furstenberg famous, and as full of character as the woman herself.
In perfect complement to Journey of a Dress, von Furstenberg will also release an autobiography this Fall.
Journey of a Dress book will be available in DVF boutiques around early December. The retail price is HK $730.
