Max Mara Prefall 2026 : Transatlantic

In the jazz age, a transatlantic trip was where the movers and shakers of Modernism rubbed shoulders and exchanged ideas. Two such were Dorothy Parker and Nancy Cunard; both celebrated for their sharp wit and intelligence, outspokenness and intellectual engagement with avant-garde circles. Both poets and activists, known for their unconventional lifestyles, strong opinions and style; they both knew the power of fashion. “Where’s the man who could ease the heart like a satin gown?”, asked Dorothy Parker, whilst Nancy Cunard’s idiosyncratic jewelry was more than a whimsy; it was a political statement. Max Mara pays tribute to the enduring style of both women with a collection whose maritime theme is as light and fresh as an ocean breeze.

Cruise liners were hailed as the purest expression of the modernist aesthetic. And not surprisingly, Modernism is a recurrent theme in the Max Mara timeline. An expedition into the Max Mara historic archive unearths a smartly tailored jacket with a sharply pleated front from 1989. With its slouchy, low waisted pants that taper at the ankle, it’s as wearable now as it was then. Linear and at the same time fluid, that jacket engenders a series of pieces where pleats are the protagonist, most notably a silk blouse with a fluttering tie at the neck and a duster coat. From that same collection come prints, artistically daubed flowers and spots executed with naïve sophistication.

Pre-Fall hits the stores at that time of year when the Max Mara woman might be hunting for a new suit to wear at work, something smart to wear for a special occasion, something to wear every day, or she may be simply seeking the capricious thrill of a novel item, a well-earned gift to herself. Max Mara applies the easy modernist aesthetic to all areas of the collection, including a satin gown sleek enough to lift even Dorothy Parker’s spirits.
