Hong Kong finally has an authentic New York-style delicatessen featuring a selection of classic smoked meat sandwiches as well as contemporary signatures.

Situated in Jardine House, Central, the 45-seat restaurant offers a variety of mouth-watering smoked meat sandwiches made from premium cuts of smoked meat. Passed down over the years from “Morty”, a Jewish immigrant in New York, Morty’s Delicatessen sticks to tradition with a 45-day aging process which is all done in-house, from the spice rub to the curing and smoking and resting. Just like in the early 1900s, Morty’s beef is cured for more than 20-days at a controlled temperature, then set to cook for another 24 hours, and smoked to perfection using American hickory and cherry wood chips to bring out the sweet yet strong, hearty bacon-like flavours of the meat. After this five-stage process, the brisket is cooled to the perfect temperature, then steamed to revive the natural juices.

Classic sandwiches include: “Reuben” with slow smoked pastrami, Swiss cheese, thousand island dressing and sauerkraut on freshly baked home-made rye bread; “Classic Pastrami” with hand-cut lean, medium or fatty beef brisket, traditional yellow mustard on house rye bread; and “Smoked Turkey” with American turkey breast on house rye bread and many more. Morty’s also offers specialty sandwiches such as “Smoked Truffle Chicken” with grilled shitake mushroom, tomato, arugula and truffle mayonnaise on ciabatta and “Albacore Tuna Salad” with celery, red onion, butter lettuce, tomato and Hellman’s mayonnaise on thick sliced bread. Bagel lovers will enjoy the “Bagel & House Lox” with chive and dill cream cheese, cold smoked Atlantic salmon, tomato and red onion on bagel or they can also upgrade any of the other sandwiches to a bagel instead.

Apart from sandwiches, diners can also enjoy a selection of poutines such as “Classic” which comes with fries, cheddar cheese and homemade gravy, “Morty’s” which has the addition of chopped pastrami to the classic and “Kitchen Sink” which is the classic plus chili and house smoked meats. A selection of freshly-made salads are also available for vegetarians.

“Not only do we smoke our own meat, but all the gluten-free and dairy-free sauces and dressings are made in house too. Guests can also select their preferred bread from our menu as we bake our own rye, white and wheat bread along with the baguettes, and ciabattas every morning,” says Gerald Li, founder of Morty’s Delicatessen.

Besides breakfast, lunch and dinner, Morty’s is also open for Happy Hour from 3pm to 7pm with a special selection of food and cocktails such as “Bloody Morty’s”, “Caesar “EH”, “Old Fashion” and many more.

For takeaway, Morty’s also offers online ordering to minimize waiting time and for orders over HK$1,000, Morty’s will deliver within a one kilometre radius. In addition, Morty’s can cater for junk parties as well.
