4,000-square-feet old street straight out of ancient China

Introduction to the culture of hanfu with virtual fitting via AR technology

Good Fortune Lunar New Year Market featuring about 20 booths with seasonal flowers & festive items

Exhibition of ink paintings by renowned Hong Kong artists Water Poon and TK Chan

Hong Kong is getting ready for Lunar New Year, one of the most culturally profound and widely celebrated Chinese festivals. The festival is not only a time for families and friends to get together, but it also provides a unique opportunity for learning about Chinese culture. From 27 January to 28 February 2021, Olympian City is organising the Chinese New Year Cultural Extravaganza to create an enriching and educational experience that also includes festive foods and shopping.

The Chinese New Year Cultural Extravaganza is bringing to life an old Chinese street occupying a floor space of 4,000 square feet and teeming with oriental elements; lines of hanging red lanterns, a small footbridge over a lotus pond and a flowering peach blossom tree will serve as perfect photo backdrops. In addition, there will be an exhibition of hanfu (traditional clothing worn by Han Chinese), whose characteristics and historical backgrounds will be explained by docents. Exhibitiongoers can virtually try on the costumes in theAR Hanfu Fitting Room and be transported to ancient China. S+ REWARDS members are exclusively invited to join Hanfu Experience Day, on which they will have the opportunity to wear real hanfu with their families and friends, topped up by complimentary hairstyling services, and have their photos taken by professional photographers.

Another highlight is the Good Fortune Lunar New Year Market, which features about 20 booths selling festive foods and decorations as well as seasonal flowers for locals to get prepared for the Year of the Cow. The market will also showcase selected works by notable Hong Kong photographer, calligrapher and painter Water Poon and contemporary ink artist TK Chan. On designated Sundays, festive melodies will be played during live Chinese classical music performances to add a touch of poetry to the joyful ambience. Everyone is invited to visit Olympian City with their families and friends this Lunar New Year to experience the culture of hanfu and take part in a variety of festive activities.

Hanfu display at the Chinese New Year Cultural Extravaganza

The Chinese New Year Cultural Extravaganza will turn the Atrium of Olympian City 2 into an old Chinese street and transport visitors to ancient China. Mimicking bluestone paving from the old days, the recreated street features several shops including an inn and a fabric shop that are made from wood with red tile roofs. Big red lanterns symbolising reunion are hung from the structures, which also feature decorative windows carved with the Chinese character “blessing” to showcase the uniqueness of traditional Chinese architecture.

Hanfu, or traditional clothing worn by Han Chinese, is an integral part of the deeply rooted Chinese culture. Many different styles of hanfu had appeared throughout history. Some of them, such as Ming-styled y-shaped collar top, Daopao from the Ming dynasty, and Tang-styled round-collar robe, will be showcased at the mentioned fabric shop, together with a detailed introduction on 12 hanfu styles and docents explaining the characteristics of hanfu from different eras, interspersed with historical backgrounds to deepen public understanding of the culture of hanfu.

The venue also boasts various photo spots, including a lotus pond straddled by a small footbridge and the colourful lanterns-filled street. There will be a 3-metre-tall peach blossom tree, which visitors are encouraged to walk around 3 times to attract career success and romance in the Year of the Cow. Next to the tree will be an exhibition of New Year-themed paintings by multi-media artist Water Poon, who is famous for his simple style, and ink artist TK Chan, whose contemporary ink paintings are characterised by the use of colours. Patrons of Olympian City are invited to check out the Chinese New Year Cultural Extravaganza to appreciate the intricate ancient Chinese architecture and capture cheerful moments with their loved ones in the old street.

A virtual experience of traditional Chinese fashion at the AR Hanfu Fitting Room

Visitors will find the AR Hanfu Fitting Room at the Chinese New Year Cultural Extravaganza. Using the mobile app or the tablets available on site, they can try on different styles of hanfu from simple to colourful ones and travel back in time in just a few seconds, making it a fun experience worth sharing with families and friends. A recommendation is to snap photos in front of the nostalgic fabric shop and the engraved window for a total Chinese cultural experience.

Pick up something new from the Good Fortune Lunar New Year Market for the Year of the Cow

The Lunar New Year calls for all things new. From 29 January to 11 February 2021, Olympian City will be organising the Good Fortune Lunar New Year Market, where about 20 booths will be selling festive foods and decorations, from dried seafood to made-in-Hong Kong preserved sausages, gift boxes, traditional cakes, Chinese tea and tea ware. Festive cakes sold by one-Michelin-star dim sum restaurant Tim Ho Wan will make particularly impressive gifts.

During the Lunar New Year, families like to decorate their homes in shades of crimson, an auspicious colour in Chinese culture. Fresh seasonal flowers, signalling a thriving new beginning, are also must-have items. Visitors to the Good Fortune Lunar New Year Market will find some of the best flowers for the season like peach blossom, plum blossom, daffodil and rhododendron, as well as auspicious fruit-bearing and foliage plants like tangerine, nipple fruit and water bamboo to buy and bring home.

Gold pressed red envelops blend tradition with class

Printed in a bold red colour, the “Blessings-filled red envelops” designed by Olympian City are made from premium ISO14001-certified 100% recycled paper to highlight the mall’s mission to promote a sustainable lifestyle. Carrying a gold pressed design with the Chinese character “blessing” in the middle, which is inspired by window carvings in traditional Chinese architecture, the red envelops exude oriental flavours in a minimalist manner. The octagonal design is hoped to bring a year of amicable relationships, while the greeting message on the top right corner is straightforward and aligned with the modern simplicity of the overall design.

For both givers and recipients of red envelops, a beautiful red envelop pouch can come in handy. Made with damask, a weaving technique commonly used in ancient China, with detailed auspicious clouds embroidered in silk, the matching red “blessings-filled red envelop pouch” is chic and sophisticated and is hoped to bring good luck in the Year of the Cow.
