Frenchies, a neighbourhood bakery and coffee shop with a plentiful viennoiserie counter, is now open on Hollywood Road. The captivating aroma of freshly baked bread and toasty, locally-roasted coffee during soft opening has ensured that Frenchies already has a devoted neighbourhood following, with those in the know stopping by from 7am daily to snap up a morning brew and artisanal pastry.

The self-proclaimed viennoiserie boasts an array of decadent baked goods ranging from classic Croissants (HK$20), made with special flour ground just outside of Paris, to creative takes on the traditional French pastry such as the signature Dragon’s Back (HK$35) featuring fragrant sweet almond paste and orange. The show-stopping Espresso Cinnamon Roll (HK$35) is a wonderful afternoon indulgence or workday motivator, and like all Frenchies pastries, is thoughtfully portioned for sharing.

Generous loaves of Wholewheat Sourdough (HK$70/1kg loaf, HK$40/500g loaf) are perfect for breaking bread with family, and are made using a recipe painstakingly tested over 100 loaves.

Guests can opt to pick up their favourite treat to go, or take a seat at the window-facing counter and take in the buzzing scene on Hollywood Road. Those who prefer to keep their feet up can take advantage of city-wide delivery via Deliveroo or by ordering in advance via the website.

The name Frenchies nods to the colloquial term French expatriates are often affectionately nicknamed. Playing to the familial community that ‘Frenchies’ are known to build no matter which city they find themselves in, Frenchies strives to be a local hub for those seeking friendly service, exceptional quality and fair prices.

Frenchies is the creation of 33 year old Matthieu Maury, who first arrived in Hong Kong in 2013, speaking only French. Immediately captivated by the city, the passionate hospitality entrepreneur worked for well-known establishments, including Fineprint and Eric Kayser, and founded the popular coffee chain La Station in Wan Chai, before coming up with the Frenchies concept in 2021.

“Frenchies is all about community. Our aesthetic is definitely modern, but our values are entirely traditional. Every member of our team, from our friendly bakers to enthusiastic baristas believes in delivering a warm and welcoming experience to our guests. No corners have been cut when it comes to our offering. Our superior coffee beans arrive green and are roasted locally to ensure freshness of flavour, whilst our viennoiserie selection, made with French butter and patisserie flour, is a cut above the rest,” says Matthieu.
