BAR KAP Opens at The House of Tan Yeok Nee, Reimagining Heritage Through Modern Craft

A new chapter unfolds at The House of Tan Yeok Nee, as BAR KAP opens its doors, transforming one of Singapore’s most iconic heritage homes into a contemporary cocktail destination.

Set within the last of Singapore’s famed Four Grand Mansions, the space is conceived as more than a bar — it is a living archive, where history is not preserved in stillness, but reinterpreted through craft, atmosphere and experience.

Rather than leaning on nostalgia, BAR KAP presents a thoughtful dialogue between past and present. Conceived by Gaia Lifestyle Group in partnership with Studio Ryecroft, the experience unfolds through a sequence of chambers, each offering its own rhythm and perspective. The philosophy is simple yet considered: heritage in the walls, modernity in the glass.

At the centre of the concept is a cocktail programme shaped by the evolving story of the house. Each section of the menu reflects a distinct era, translating history into flavour. From the Kapitan Era, inspired by the life and travels of Tan Yeok Nee himself, to the Station Master Era, which draws on colonial influences, the drinks explore a balance of cultural exchange and craftsmanship.

The approach extends into innovation, with BAR KAP introducing one of Singapore’s first clay-ageing programmes, where cocktails are matured in traditional vessels to refine texture and depth over time. Alongside this, zero-proof creations are crafted with equal precision, reflecting a contemporary shift towards more inclusive drinking experiences.

Complementing the cocktails is a menu of familiar flavours reimagined with a modern touch. From light, textural starters to more substantial plates shaped by Southeast Asia’s layered culinary influences, the offering moves with the same sense of balance — thoughtful, yet approachable.

The design of the space echoes this layered narrative. Original timber beams and intricate carvings are preserved and quietly accentuated, while mirrors and reflective surfaces introduce depth and movement. Intimate seating, elevated booths and private rooms unfold throughout the house, each space carrying its own identity — from a carriage-inspired room to a chamber reminiscent of a traditional apothecary.

Also within the house, Jing Studio offers a contemporary interpretation of tea culture, led by a dedicated Tea Master. Through single-origin brews, refined blends and thoughtfully paired confections, it provides a quieter counterpoint to the energy of the bar.

Together, BAR KAP and Jing Studio reimagine The House of Tan Yeok Nee as a destination where history is experienced rather than observed. In a city that moves quickly, it offers a rare kind of pause — one shaped by memory, craft and a sense of continuity.
